Venezuela Live Updates: Death Toll Rises to 589 as Rescuers Search for Quake Survivors

There are earthquakes that appear from the depths of the earth . . . And earthquakes that live in the depths of a soul, earthquakes of the heart and of the spirit.

The former destroys buildings and homes, and rearranges the earth . . . That kind of earthquake devastates and literally kills prople and animals. 500 found dead ~ most likely more by now. May God have mercy.

And then the earthquakes of the soul, the ones that bring great fear and mourning, much mourning. When one’s heart breaks as they keep vigil over a loved one . . . Or another grieves over a lost child . . . Or another mourns permanent loss that will leave pain in their hearts forever. May God have mercy.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” ~Psalm 46:1-2:

God of extravagant mercy, help them to know your mercy even if your mercy doesn’t feel so extravagant. When the earth shakes beneath our feet, calm me from fear and shield me from harm. Keep my loved ones and me safe right now. Grant me peace in the middle of this chaos, and be our rock and protector. Amen.

God of the heavens, Creator of the earth, I come to you with my heart, seeking your divine protection. Wrap me in your steadfast love and shield me from harm. Guard our homes, our communities, our children, and those who are vulnerable. Give me wisdom and courage to help another person in need. Amen.

God of extravagant mercy, Christ our kind Redeemer, Spirit of wind and flame, and of moving earth: I come before you seeking mercy and protection. I pray for everyone in the affected areas. Comfort those who are frightened, injured, or grieving. Guide the hands of the first responders and rescue teams as they work to help those in need. In the Holy Name of Christ, Amen and amen.
